I’ve been contributing to a couple of blogs over the years, but I haven’t done the personal writing thing in a while now.
I have been meaning to get back to it, though, whether it’s just for practice or for having a rant ever so often, so I began tinkering…
I initiated this process a couple of months ago, with a personal newsletter (that has quickly become highly irregular) – it’s a reading list of things I’d probably mention over dinner, coming off the back of a fairly self-centred realisation that I tend to share the same links with different people (individually) too often. It’s also a good test bed for a series of personal experiments, but more on that later. In the meantime, just sign up!
Why not (insert platform name here)?
I’ve given this quite a bit of thought, and I came to the conclusion that I just don’t want to be at the mercy of any ultimately ephemeral social or publishing platforms. So I’ll just be using a good, old-fashioned, self-hosted WordPress that I intend to mod and test the shit out of.
What I will be doing, though, is testing amplification through sites like Medium or LinkedIn, as I’ve seen it bear fruit in some instances.
What will the writing be about?
It’s too early to tell just yet, but here are some guidelines…
- Not too much work stuff. I intend to do most of that kind of writing on the Tom Sawyer blog, but stay tuned.
- Plenty of experiments. I tend to fiddle with a lot of things and put myself in all kinds of situations, from going walletless to seeing how many cell towers I’d pick up if I left my phone on during a flight.
- People and projects that I admire, encourage and support.
Hope you enjoy it all and subscribe – any feedback is very welcome!
