Sony broadcasting Wimbledon in 3D

Nice one: this year is the first time Wimbledon will be broadcast in 3D and can be viewed at a number of screens around the world. From tomorrow (July 1st), the tournament will be aired live - in 3D - at cinemas across the world. The men's and women's final plus the men's semi-final in 3D? Yes please.

To find a screen, just visit the website here.

The Museum of Me

Picture_312
It's always nice to see a fairly common concept executed properly (think about all of those old web apps that let you put photos of you on billboards in Times Square) - that's what Intel is doing with its new "The Museum of Me" Facebook app, but with a quite brilliant and dare-I-say upscale twist... Apparently it's a (non-intrusive) advertisement for their Core i5 processors. At the time of this posting it had amassed over 290K likes in about 44 hours.

HTC's new Android line-up

And the moment has finally come - HTC has announced its new line-up of Android devices - and they're good. 5 phones (3 product updates and 2 new ones with heavy Facebook integration), one 7" tablet. They even got Zuckerberg involved in the keynote! Apologies for the lack of diversity regarding the sources...

I'll be aiming for the Incredible S. Will post the full keynote when it goes up.

Some kinks in Facebook's armor

I use Facebook's 'business offerings' quite a lot these days and here are some problems I think they need to solve quite quickly. Before I go mad trying to dodge them.

  • Enable activity alerts for page admins (the usual notification system would probably do the trick but then again something hardcore would be much nicer, like being able to split your own Facebook account into 'personal' and 'professional' and get the relevant notifications for each one) - until then I'll have to live with NutshellMail and/or the more basic yet functional Hyper Alerts
  • Now that they're phasing out the old page insights (apparently it's just not recording any data from 2011 so that's that), they should probably fix the timeframe bug I keep seeing - if I set a timeframe to cover, let's say, the past 3 months of activity, it just returns a big fat error saying "Data Source did not complete: There was an error reading the data source. VisionQuest++ failed to start"
  • I'm soon planning to merge a handful of place pages with a proper business page for a client - however, there seem to be all kinds of risks (the most alarming of which is that some people have been losing all their data in the merging process). When Facebook announced the 'merging' feature, it mentioned that it's not reversible - however people are reporting that the 'unmerge' feature has been quietly enabled. Maybe it's a sign to just stay away for now?

BlackBerry'd

Blackberry-bold-9780-397x500

I've recently decided to shake things up a bit and go for a BlackBerry - behold the Bold 9780. I just wanted a second smartphone with a good physical keyboard, decent battery life (OK, I also wanted BBM) and a fairly long product life cycle (as opposed to the iPhone for example). Here are some first impressions:

  • the new OS6 is quite decent - I don't know if it's a massive update, but it's quite fast
  • the App World is very strange and quite limited (they have a lot of apps that cost more than £20 - slightly different app economy?)
  • messaging-wise, it's a very good companion
  • compared to the Torch, I think it's a much better choice
Will try to post a more detailed review, but I'll need to play around with it for far more than just a week... For now, I believe it fits in excellently alongside my Desire.

London Action

There's a nifty urban ARG called London Action coming up next week, and it sounds quite appealing:

"You’ll be given a device equipped with GPS and image-recognition software free of charge. Using this tool you’ll pick up streaming videos and virtual clues hidden in the nooks and crannies of the urban landscape. Every lead you find takes you deeper into the history of the resistance and presents a new challenge."

Interestingly enough, it's not something backed by any big companies - instead, it's all about charity. Picked it up from Londonist. If it all still seems a bit confusing, you can find guidance here.
